Fossils Life Science

Law of Superposition A principle that states that within rock layers, the youngest layer is at the top, and the oldest layer is at the bottom.
Fossil The remains of an organism preserved as a mold or cast.
Prehistoric The period of time before recorded history.
Geological Time An interval of time occupied by the geological history of Earth.
Geological Column A diagram that shows a rock formation arranged by age.
Stratigraphy The study of the order and position of rock layers.
Relative Age The age of a rock layer or fossil within compared to the age of other layers.
Exact Age The age of a rock layer or fossil within a rock layer measured in years
Common Ancestry The state of two species sharing a common ancestor that both modern species are descendant of.
Anatomical Structure A particular complex body part of a living thing.
Genetic code A series of DNA or RNA molecules that carry the genetic information within living things.
Extinct A state of a species having no living member or no longer existing.
Extant A state of species still existing.
Taxa Groups of species, families, or classes of animals that share common features or traits.
Embryonic Development The development and formation of an embryo, an unborn or unhatched offspring that will further develop an grow.
