bio unit 2

TermDefinition
Homeostasis Stable internal environment
ATP Adenosine Triphosphate
Eukaryotes True Nucleus, Multicellular
Prokaryotes Unicellular, No Nucleus
Symbiosis process when 2 living things come together
Orders All characteristics of life emerge from a complex organization
Reproduction Life comes from Life, Living things can replicate, ultimately carry our genetic code.
Autotroph CAN provide or create food for themselves
Heterotroph CANNOT provide or create their own food.
Evolutionary Adaptation Life evolves as a result from interaction between organisms and their environment
Cell Theory 1. ALL living things organisms are composed of cells. 2. CELLS is the basic unit of life 3. CELLS arise from pre-existing cells.
Exocytosis Outside of the cell process
Endocytosis Inside the cell process
Plasma Membrane Is a structurally distinctive surface membrane that surrounds cells.
Selective Permeable Allows the cell to exchange materials with the environment
Organelle Specialized to carry out cell activities. Most organelles are enclosed in a membrane.
Chromatin Relaxed version of DNA
Chromosome Organized version of DNA
Cytosol Fluid component within Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells.
Nucleolus The dense region located within the nucleus
Chloroplasts Organelle found in plants and photosynthetic protists that absorbs sunlight & uses it to drive the synthesis of organic compounds from carbon dioxide and water.
Mitochondria Organelle in eukaryotic cells that serves as the site of cellular respiration uses oxygen to break down organic molecules and synthesize ATP
Lysosome A membrane enclosed sac of hydrolytic enzymes found in the cytoplasm of animal cells.
Golgi apparatus Warehouse/POST OFFICE for sorting, shipping receiving and routing products of the Endoplasmic Reticulum.
Cristae Outer membrane is smooth, but the inner membrane is convoluted with inholdings called...
ROUGH ER Has an outer surface studded with bound ribosomes. The bound ribosomes synthesize POLYPEPTIDES.
SMOOTH ER Appears tubular with a smooth outer surface. Enzymes along the membrane catalyze the synthesis of lipids and carbohydrates
Cytoskeleton A network of fibers extending from the cytoplasm providing support to the cell along with shape and movement.
Fluid Mosaic Model states that the membrane is a mosaic of lipids and protein molecules that can move laterally in a fluid bilayer of phospholipids.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
