| Term | Definition |

| surface current | the water on the very surface to several hundred meters below |
| deep ocean current | currents that slowly move along the ocean floor all the way around the globe |
| thermohaline current | deep ocean currents driven by temperature and salinity |
| coriolis effect | effect of earth's rotation on the direction of winds and ocean currents |
| percolation | percolation filters down in an aquifer, or an area of collected water underground |
| infiltration | when water moves into the ground from the surface and begins to soak into the soil and rock layers underneath |
| transpiration | water absorbed by plants is evaporated into the atmosphere from leaves |
| troposphere | "tropo-" means turning or changing; the lowest layer of earth's atmosphere |
| exosphere | exosphere is the outermost layer of earth |
| ionosphere | the part of earth's atmosphere beginning at an altitude of about 30 miles |
| cP | cold (low temp) and dry (low moisture) |
| cT | warm (high temp) and dry (low moisture) |
| mT | warm, high temperatures, and usually unstable. most of the precipitation eastern 2/3rds of the US |
| mP | cold (low temp) and wet (high moisture) |
