Integumentary System Consists of hair, nails, and cutaneous glands
Dendritic cells Detect foreign matter and microbes. Also wards off infection
Produces pigment and is in the deepest layer of the epidermis Melanocytes
Tactile Cells Specialized for touch sensation
Divides and replaces other cells Stem cells
Major cell type in the Epidermis (most common) Keratinocytes
Stratum Lucidum Present only in thick epidermis of palms and soles
Stratum Basale Deepest layer, single layer of cells
Has many layers of keratinocytes & dendritic cells Stratum spinosum
Three to five layers of flat keratinocytes Stratum granulosum
Stratum Corneum Gives skin toughness Cells flake off, dead keratinocytes
Dermis Connective Tissue
Epidermis
Hypodermis
