TermDefinition
topography the arrangement of the natural and artificial physical features of an area. "the topography of the island"
Topographic map Topographic maps are detailed, accurate graphic representations of features that appear on the Earth's surface.
contour line a line on a map joining points of equal height above or below sea level.
relief Relief' is the term used for the differences in height from place to place on the land's surface and it is greatly affected by the underlying geology. Relief relies on the hardness, permeability and structure of a rock.
contour interval Contour interval definition, the difference in elevation represented by each contour line on a topographic map.
index contour contour lines are decreasing, there is a decrease in elevation.
scale An ordered system of numbering or indexing that is used as a reference standard in measurement, in which each number corresponds to some physical quantity.
slope Numerical measure of a line's inclination relative to the horizontal. In analytic geometry, the slope of any line, ray, or line segment is the ratio of the vertical to the horizontal distance between any two points on it
remote sensing Remote sensing is the process of detecting and monitoring the physical characteristics of an area by measuring its reflected and emitted radiation at a distance (typically from satellite or aircraft
global positioning network of satellites and receiving devices used to determine the location of something on Earth
geographic information system computer system for capturing, storing, checking, and displaying data related to positions on Earth's surface.
