vocabulary for cardiovascular system

| endocardium | smooth layer of cells that line the inside of the heart and is continous with the inside of the blood vessels |
| erythrocytes | red blood cells,produced in the red bone marrow at the rate of one million per minute |
| hemoglobin | complex protein composed of the protein molecule called "globin" and the iron compound called "heme" |
| left atrium | recieves oxygenated blood from the lungs |
| left ventricles | recieves blood from the left atrium and pumps the blood into the aorta for transport of the body cells |
| leukocytes | white blood cels,are not as numerous as are erythrocytes. |
| mitral valve | located between the left atrium and left ventricle closes when the left ventricle closes or when left ventricle is contracting |
| myocardium | the muscular middle layer |
| periocardium | double-layered membrane |
| plasma | approximately 90 percent water,with many dissoved or suspended substances |
| pulmonary valve | located between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery ,a blood vessel that carries blood to the lungs |
| right atrium | recieves blood as it returns from the body cell |
| right ventricle | recieves blood from the right atrium and pumps the blood into the pulmonary artery,which carries the blood to the lungs for oxygen |
| septum | muscular wall that seperates the heart into a right side and a left side |
| systole | period of ventricular contractation |
| thrombocytes | also called platelets are usually described as a fragment of pieces of cells because they lack nuclei |
| tricuspid valve | located between the right atrium and the right ventricle |
| veins | blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart |
