Physical Science
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| mass | How much matter is in something: Measured in grams (triple beam balance, pan scale) It always stays the same. |
| volume | How much space something takes up. Measured in liters or milliliters uses a Graduated cylinder |
| temperature | How hot or cold something is in Celsius. Uses a thermometer! |
| buoyance | Able to float |
| density | The amount of molecules in matter that allow it to float or sink |
| weight | The measurement of the pull of gravity of an object |
| physical properties | Parts of an object that can be observed during the five senses |
| phases or states of matter | solid, liquid, gas |
| matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space ( solid, liquid gas) |
| solid | Definite size and shape. The molecules are packed together tightly. |
| liquid | Definite size, but not a define shape. Takes the shape of the container. |
| gas | No definite size or shape. The molecules are far apart and move rapidly. |
| boiling point of water | 100 degrees Celsius |
| freezing point of water | 0 degrees Celsius |
| mixture | Two or more substances that mixed together but can be separated---physical properties stay the same |
| solution | Two or more substances that when mixed together can NOT be separated---physical properties change |
| dissolve | To add solid or gas to a liquid so that the particles get so small you can no longer see them |
| ingredients | The individual substances added to a mixture |
| classify | to put into groups |
| investigation | The scientific process used to answer questions by collecting data; you change one variable and everything else stays the same |
| energy | the ability to do work or cause change |
| mechanical energy | energy produced by a moving part or machine |
| kinetic energy | energy in motion |
| potential energy | energy at rest |
| electrical energy | movement of charged particles |
| light energy | energy that allows our eyes to see |
| thermal energy | energy that causes a transfer of heat |
| sound energy | energy produced from a vibration that you hear |
