Living Water

TermDefinition
Adaptation a behavioral, structural, or physiological trait that increases a species' change of survival
Aquatic Organisms live in water and have adaptations to do so
Ectothermic body temperature changes as the surrounding water changes
Osmoregulation physiological adaptation found in fish to enable fish to live in both freshwater and saltwater habitats
Salinity refers to salt levels
Euryhaline fish that can live in freshwater, brackish, and saltwater environments
Gills contain capillaries that take up dissolved oxygen and release carbon dioxide
Vertebrates Organisms with a backbone
Invertebrates Organisms without a backbone
Dorsal fin Located along the back of a fish; keeps the fish upright and stable
Caudal fin tail fin
Anal fin Located underneath the fish near the anus
Pectoral Fin located under the fish near toward the head used for steering or maneuvering
Pelvic Fin located under the fish near toward the tail used for steering or maneuvering
Swim Bladder Allows fish to maintain its buoyancy
Scales Protect the skin of the fish
Counter-shading when fish are dark-colored on top and light-colored underneath
Streambed the bottom of the stream
Nearsighted Cannot see far away
Lateral line used to detect movement and vibration in the water
Cartilaginous skeletal system made of cartilage
Bony Fish skeletal system made of bone
Jawless fish example - Lampreys
Metamorphosis phase of life where insects change from one form to another
Nymph Larvae of mayflies, stoneflies, dragonflies, and damselflies
Exoskeleton an outer covering that supports and protects the animal's body
Zooplankton Animal plankton
Plankton tiny inverterbrates
Seaweed nonvascular - multicellular algae
Phytoplankton photosynthetic organisms in the plankton, also known as microalgae
Euphotic Zone Well-lit surface layer of oceans, lakes, and other bodies of water
