organelles

structures in human cells

TermDefinition
Rough endoplasmic reticulum ER with ribosomes attached that make and process proteins
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum ER without ribosomes. It makes and processes lipids and destroys toxic substances
Ribosomes small organelles that synthesise proteins
Mitochondria organelles with a double membrane. They perform cellular respiration providing energy for the cell
Cytoskeleton network of interlinking protein filaments that give the cell its shape. they also support the movement of organelles inside the cytoplasm or when the cell divides
Centrioles cylinders formed by tubules that direct the movement of cilia and take part oin the sharing of genetic material during cell division
Vacuoles small sacks that store various substances
Lysosomes membrane sacs that contain digestive enzymes
Golgi apparatus organelle formed by several flattened sac-like membranes and receives substances from the ER and passes them on to other organelles so they can be secreted
Cell membrane a thin layer that separates the cell from its environment
Cytoplasm the fluid that fills a cell, and contains the cell organelles.
Nucleus stores genetic material that contains essential information to control cell functions
