evaporation | when water is heated and turns to a gas (water vapor) |
condensation | when water vapor (gas) cools down and turns to a liquid--forms clouds in the sky |
precipitation | any form of water falling from clouds (rain, snow, sleet, hail) |
transpiration | when water from plants heats up and turns into a gas |

infiltration | when water enters the ground from the surface |
percolation | when water flows underground through rocks and soil |
accumulation | rivers, lakes, oceans--where water gathers |
solid | a state of matter that has a definite shape and a definite volume; when water is in this state, it is because its temperature is below the freezing point and the water molecules are close together |
liquid | a state of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape; when water is in this state, is above the freezing point and the water molecules are not quite as close together as in the solid state |
gas | a state of matter with no definite shape or volume; when water is in this state, it is called "water vapor," and you cannot see it |
