The Earth and all of the other planets orbit the Sun in the same plane, what is this plane called? Ecliptic
Why are all of the solar system planets found on this plane? its where gravity keeps them
What is the zodiac? If we project the ecliptic plane out into space, 13 constellations are intersected by the plane
Define astrology. Is the "study" of the movement and relative positions of celestial bodies interpreted as having influence on human affairs and the natural world
What is the difference between astronomy and astrology? Astronomy is about science and fact where as astrology is about the idea of Zodiac signs
What is the tilt of Earth’s axis (degrees)? 23.5 degree
What object does Earth’s axis point to in the night time sky? Star Polaris in the constellation Ursa Minor
Where does Earth rotate fastest? Slowest? Farthest: the equator, Slowest: north and south pole
How many time zones are there? _____ How far apart are they separated (in degrees of longitude) around the globe? ______ What would happen to clock time if you were travelling to the east and crossed a time meridian? __________ To the west? __________ 24; 15 degree; east becomes later time, west becomes earlier times
Define revolution/orbit. the movement of a body around another body in space. The Earth in its orbit around the sun.
Precisely how long is an Earth year? 365.25 days
Why do we need leap years? Since there's an extra .25 of a day every 4 years we have to add an extra day to the calendar. We do this in order to keep the seasons in the same months
What is an Astronomical Unit? the average distance from earth to the sun
What is parallax? the effect whereby the position of an object appears to differ or shift its location when viewed from different positions
What is the actual shape of Earth’s orbit around the Sun? ellipse
Where is the Sun located in relation of Earth(or any planets) orbit? the center of the solar system
What is the name and date of Earth’s closest approach to the Sun? Name and date of farthest approach to Sun? Perihelion is closest, on Jan 2.. Aphelion is farthest, on July 2
Why does Earth experience seasons? because the axis is tilted
What occurs on the Summer Solstice? What day does this occur? sun moves to its highest point north of the equator, date is June 21
What is an equinox? two days during the year, when the sun is midway between solstices, neither hemisphere is tilted toward sun
