Chapter 1

Studying for 6th grade science quiz.

TermDefinition
geologist An expert in geology who studies what the Earth is made of and how it was formed.
rock The material that forms earth's hard surface.
geology The modern science of_______the study of planet earth.
constructive force Shape the surface by building up mountains and landmases.
destructive force That slowly wear away mountains and eventually every other feacher on the surface.
continent They knew that there were 7 great land masses.
seismic wave When earthquakes occur they produce what?
pressure A force pushing on a surface or area.
crust A layer of rock that forms the outer layer of the earth.
basalt A dark dense rock with a fine texture.
granite A rock that has larger crystals than basalt and is not as dense.
Lithosphere The uppermost part of the mantle and the crust form a rigid layer.
asthenosphere This is a soft layer
inner core A dense ball of metal.
convection Heat transfer by the movement of heated fluid.
density Is a measure of how much mass there is in a volume substance.
convection current Continue as long as heated fluid is added
heat transfer Energy going from hot objects to cold ones. (hot pot burning your cool hand)
mantle A layer of hot rock.
outer core A layer of molten metal surrounding the inner core.
radiation The transfer of energy through empty space.
conduction Heat transfer by direct contact of particles.
continental drift The pieces slowly moved to where they are today.
Pangea Means all lands.
fossil Any trace of ancient organisms that have been preserved in rock.
deep-ocean trench Long and narrow on the seafloor.
mid-ocean ridge The longest chain of mountains in the world.
sonar A device that bounces sound waves of underwater objects.
seafloor spreading Continuously adds material to the ocean floor.
subduction The process where the ocean floor sinks beneath a deep ocean trench.
plate The lithosphere is broken into separate pieces called what?
scientific theory A well-tested concept that explains a wide range of observations.
plate tectonics Slow motion, driven by convection currents in the mantle. The theory of plate tectonics explains the formation, movement, and subduction of Earth's plates.
fault Extend deep into the in Earth's crust where rocks have slipped past each other
transform boundary A place where two plates slip past each other, moving in opposite directions.
divergent boundary The place where two plates move apart, or diverge.
rift valley A deep valley called a ______ forms along the divergent boundary.
convergent boundary The place where two plates come together, or converge.
