| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Nitrogen-fixing bacteria | microorganisms capable of transforming atmospheric nitrogen into fixed nitrogen |
| Nitrification | a microbial process that converts ammonia and similar nitrogen compounds into nitrite (NO2–) and then nitrate (NO3–) |
| Denitrification | the conversion of soil nitrate to the nitrogen gases N2O and N2 |
| Eutrophication | excessive richness of nutrients in a lake or other body of water, frequently due to runoff from the land, which causes a dense growth of plant life and death of animal life from lack of oxygen |
| Acid rain | rain or any other form of precipitation that is unusually acidic, meaning that it has elevated levels of hydrogen ions (low pH) |
| Photosynthesis | the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and energy in the form of sugar |
| Respiration | a process in living organisms involving the production of energy, typically with the intake of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide from the oxidation of complex organic substances |
| Fossil fuels | a natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms |
| Greenhouse gas | gases in the earth's atmosphere that absorb IR from the sun and release it |
| Erosion | process in which earthen materials are worn away and transported by natural forces such as wind or water |
| Algal bloom | a rapid growth of microscopic algae or cyanobacteria in water |
| Transpiration | a process that involves loss of water vapour through the stomata of plants |
| Run off | the part of the water cycle in which the water flows over the land as surface water rather than be absorbed into groundwater or evaporating |
