QuestionAnswer
plot The mountain or the scheme of the main story
exposition The beginning of a story including background information
setting Time, place and environment
potential conflict A situation in which a conflict is expected to occur in the future due to the circumstances at the current time
rising action leads up to the plot’s climax by giving a series of events that lead up to a conflict that must be overcome.
climax the highest point in the narrative. Or where the drama or tension occurs
falling action Things slowly start to resolve, deflate the tension and give time for the characters to unwind.
resolution end of the story, gives a solution to the central conflict of the story.
charecterization methods a writer uses to reveal a character’s values, feelings, goals etc.
protagonist Main character who goes through conflicts and drives the action. A character whose fate matters most.
antagonist a character opposing the main character and going against their personality and beliefs.
point of view perspective in which an author tells a story.
first person The narrator is telling the story from their own point of view.
second person the reader is part of the story and the word “you” is used.
third person perspective of a single protagonist, referring to them by their name or using they/she/he
Third Person Omniscient narrator is “all knowing” and has access to the characters thoughts and feelings.
Third Person Objective The narrator only reports what happens but does know the motivations or emotions or any thoughts of the charecters
conflict A problem that the protagonist faces during the climax of the plot.
internal- person vs self a conflict that takes place inside the character’s mind
external-person vs person the main character’s goal is obstructed by another character or multiple characters.
external- person vs society Where the conflict roots from the society as a whole and the protagonist is against it.
external- person vs nature the character faces resistance from a natural force.

The process of analysis Observe, identity patterns, draw a conclusion
what forms the setting/idea/even who, what, when, where, why
A part of thesis Device (on the pages)
B part of thesis Effect (between the pages)
C part of thesis theme (connection to the world)
Topic Sentence your claim (specific version of thesis, has your device and relation to the theme)
evidence proof of claim (imbedded quote from text usually)
Conclusion close argument, transition
Explanation how evidence supports claim (explain evidence, connect to claim)
