What is Biology? The study of life
What five characteristics must organisms have? made up of cells, replication/reproduction, evolve, contain genetic information, acquire and use energy
What must the hierarchy of living organisms do? start simple and get more complex, have emergent properties, cover different levels.
What is the order of the hierarchy of living organisms? atom, molecule, macromolecule, organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism
What makes up the cellular level? atom, molecule, organelle, cell
What makes up the organismal level? tissue, organ, organ system, organism
What makes up the population system? population, species, community, ecosystem, biosphere
What is taxonomy? the classification of organisms
Which two points define the classification of organisms? similar traits, start general and get more specific
What are the taxonomic levels from the most to least inclusive? Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species
What is important when writing names? The genus name is more important, the species name is not important but helpful
What is phylogeny? the understanding of genealogical relationships between organism
What are theories? A collection of hypotheses that have not been falsified
What are the two unifying theories in biology? The cell theory and the theory of evolution by natural selection

What are cells? The smallest living unit, contain a plasma membrane, contain genetic material, all organisms are made up of cells
Where did cells come from? two competing hypothesis: spontaneous generation and cells from cells
