Ecosystems Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Environment The LIVING and NON-LIVING organisms that surround and affect the organism.
Decomposer Found at the end of the food chain. Break down dead organisms.
Producer An organism that makes its own food through photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis Makes sunlight energy available to all organisms in an ecosystem.
Mutualism Both organisms benefit.
Mutualism Bird & Flower Relationship. Bee gets nectar and the flower gets pollinated.
Commensalism One organism benefits the other is not affected.
Commensalism Whale & Barnacle Relationship. Whale has NO benefits but the Barnacle gets food.
Carnivore Eats ONLY meat
Herbavore Eats ONLY plants.
Population ONE type of an organism living together. Pack of Wolves or a Swarm of Bees
Sun and Trees Trees use the sun's energy to make food.
Ecosystem All organisms living together in an environment.
Biotic Living things
Non-Biotic Non-Living things
Population A group of organisms of the same species in an ecosystem.
Community All the populations that live and interat in an area.
Habitat The place an organisms lives within an ecosystem.
Niche The role or function of an organisms in an ecosystem.
Competition The interaction between organisms to meet their needs.
Omnivore Eats both plants and animals
Predator Organisms that hunt and eat other animals.
Prey The animals that predators hunt.
Scarce Having limited resources to satisfy a need.
Chlorophyll A green molecule inside the the plant where photosynthesis takes place.
Chloroplast The green chemial inside the chloroplast that gives a leaf it's green color.
Plants take in carbon dioxide
Plants give off oxygen
animals and humans give off carbon dioxide
