Chapters 1.1 and 1.2

This is the chapter 1.1 and 1.2 biology review from the Glencoe textbook.

QuestionAnswer
What does biology mean? It is the study of living organisms.
What does science mean? It is the process of thinking and learning about what's around us.
What is an organism? It is an individual life form that is a living thing.
What do organisms include? They include things like bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, and animals.
What are 6 characteristics that all living things share? 1. They are made out of units called cells. 2. They can reproduce. 3. They have a genetic code. (DNA and RNA) 4. They can grow and develop. 5. They obtain and use energy/materials. 6. They respond to their environments.
what are the other 2 characteristics that all living things share? 7. They maintain a stable internal environment. 8. They change over time. (they evolve)
True or false: Cells are the smallest unit of life on Earth. True
True or false: Only some living things are made out of cells. False, all living things are made out of cells.
What is another name for cells? "The building blocks of life".
What is the difference between a multicellular organism and a unicellular one? A unicellular organism only has 1 alive cell while a multicellular organism is made up of multiple living cells.
What are the 2 types of reproduction? They are asexual (a single organism/cell dividing) and sexual (involves 2 parents).
True or false: All organisms use the universal genetic code and it is the same system for all living things. True.
What is the difference between growth and development? Growth means an addition of or physical increase in size because of cell division/enlargement. However, development happens when natural changes occur during an organism's lifetime.(puberty)
What is the difference between autotrophs and heterotrophs? Autotrophs make their own food like plants and heterotrophs consume other organisms for their food like animals. Heterotrophs can't make their own food like autotrophs do.
What is stimuli? It is anything that triggers a physical or behavioral change like a response.
What is homeostasis? It is how something is kept at body temperature to retain the equilibrium in the body such as shivering when cold, sweating when hot, etc.
True or false: do groups of organisms change overtime for survival with changing environments? True.
What is the scientific method? It is the system of asking questions, developing explanations, and testing these explanations in the natural world.
What are the steps of the scientific method? 1. Observe 2. Make a hypothesis 3. Experiment 4. Record and analyze data 5. Draw conclusions and report
What is a hypothesis? It is a proposed explanation based on certain events based on the evidence.
What must a hypothesis be? It must be testable.
What are hypotheses commonly written as? They can be written as if...then statements.
What is the scientific definition of an experiment? It is a planned procedure to test the hypothesis.
What are the two groups required for an experiment? They are the control group (used for comparison and not changed at all) and the experimental group. (the manipulated/tested group)
What is an independent variable? It is the factor that the experimenter changes to see what happens or factor that is changed in order to observe what happens, Valid experiments only have 1 independent variable.
What are controlled variables? They are experimenters that keep other factors held constant so they won't affect the outcome. They are not being tested.
What is the dependent variable? The factor that is measured at the end.
What is the difference between quantitative and qualitative data? Quantitative data includes numbers and qualitative data includes descriptions.
How can people analyze/record data? They can use charts, tables, and graphs to make the data easier to understand.
True or false: retesting sometimes is needed. False, retesting is always needed to verify results to get an accurate conclusion.
What do scientific theories do? They summarize a hypothesis that has been supported with repeated testing/lots of evidence. It is the best explanation for something at a given time.
