Properties of Matter
Properties of matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Mixture | A combination of two or more substances where each keeps its own properties and both can easily separated. |
| Substance | A single part of a mixture or solution |
| Physical Property | Measurable characteristics that describe the physical state of something, including mass, magnetism, temperature, density, shape, volume, and conductivity. |
| Dissolve | Spread out uniformly in a liquid |
| Solution | A particular type of mixture where a substance dissolves in another; the molecules spread evenly through the other substance, such as in salt added to water |
| Physical Change | to make different without changing what the material is made of, such as cutting, folding, or melting. |
| Soluble | Any substance that can dissolve in another is said to be soluble |
| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
| Mass | The amount of matter in something. It can be measured in grams. |
| Magnetism | Pushing or pulling force produced by a magnet. Attracting or repelling force. |
| Volume | The amount of space matter takes up; measured in liters, milliliters or cubic centimeters. |
| Relative Density | How dense something is compared with a reference material. Sink or Floating of substances |
| State of Matter | The classification of matter as a solid, liquid, or gas. Also know as physical state |
| Solid | Definite shape and size, atoms close together and little movement |
| Liquid | takes shape of its container, atoms not tightly packed and move together |
| Gas | Expands to take shape of the container, atoms far apart and moving quickly |
| Insulator | A material through which heat or electricity does not easily flow |
| Conductor | A material that allows heat or an electric current to flow through easily. |
| Conservation of Matter | The scientific rule that says that matter is never made or lost. |
| Conserve | to use our natural resources wisely, preserve, save. |
