development all of the changes that take place in the life of an organism
reproduction the production of offspring
species A group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring.
environment includes the air, water, weather, temperature, other organisms in the area, and other factors
stimulus A change in an organism's surroundings that causes the organism to react
response reaction to a stimulus
energy ability to do work
autotroph an organism that makes its own food
heterotroph organism that obtains energy from the foods it consumes; also called a consumer
homeostasis process by which organisms maintain a relatively stable internal environment
adaptation any structure, behavior, or internal process that enables an organisms to respond to stimuli and better survive in an environment
evolution gradual accumulation of adaptations over time
technology the application of scientific research to society's needs and problems
hypothesis an explanation for a question or problem than can be formally tested
data information gathered from experiments
experiment a procedure that is used to test a hypothesis
controlled experiment An experiment in which only one variable is manipulated at a time (involving two groups)
control In an experiment, the standard that is used for comparison
experimental group the group in an experiment that receives the variable being tested
independent variable The experimental factor that is manipulated; the variable whose effect is being studied.
dependent variable the condition that changes as a result of the change in the independent variable
constant a factor that remains fixed during an experiment
quantitative data numerical data
qualitative data written descriptions of what our senses detect
valid repeatable with similar results
