| organization | orderly structure shown by living things |
| growth | increase in the amount of living material and formation of new structures in an organism; a characteristic of all living things |
| development | all of the changes that take place in the life of an organism |
| reproduction | the production of offspring |
| species | A group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring. |
| environment | includes the air, water, weather, temperature, other organisms in the area, and other factors |
| stimulus | A change in an organism's surroundings that causes the organism to react |
| response | reaction to a stimulus |
| energy | ability to do work |
| autotroph | an organism that makes its own food |
| heterotroph | organism that obtains energy from the foods it consumes; also called a consumer |
| homeostasis | process by which organisms maintain a relatively stable internal environment |
| adaptation | any structure, behavior, or internal process that enables an organisms to respond to stimuli and better survive in an environment |
| evolution | gradual accumulation of adaptations over time |
| technology | the application of scientific research to society's needs and problems |
| hypothesis | an explanation for a question or problem than can be formally tested |
| data | information gathered from experiments |
| experiment | a procedure that is used to test a hypothesis |
| controlled experiment | An experiment in which only one variable is manipulated at a time (involving two groups) |
| control | In an experiment, the standard that is used for comparison |
| experimental group | the group in an experiment that receives the variable being tested |
| independent variable | The experimental factor that is manipulated; the variable whose effect is being studied. |
| dependent variable | the condition that changes as a result of the change in the independent variable |
| constant | a factor that remains fixed during an experiment |
| quantitative data | numerical data |
| qualitative data | written descriptions of what our senses detect |
| valid | repeatable with similar results |
