Dentistry test

TermDefinition
Infectious Agent Chain 1.Pathogen 2.Reservior Host 3.Portal of exit 4. Transmission 5.Portal of entry 6.New Susceptible host
Infectious Agent fungus, Virus, Bacteria, Protozoa, Prion
1st Link: Pathogen micro organism that is capable of causing a infectious disease.
2nd Link: Reservoir Host Where the micro organism lives, east and breeds
3rd Link: Portal of Exit where it leaves. Could be through a cough, blood or bodily excretion
4th Link: Transmission How the pathogen is passed on, could be direct or indirect, through Airborne, Percutaneous, Blood Borne, food/water, fecal/oral Transmission,
5th Link: Portal of entry Where the pathogen enters, does not have to be the same as the portal of exit
6th Link: New Susceptible Host becomes new reservoir host and chain continues
Transmission types Airborne, Percutaneous, Blood Borne, Food/Water, Fecal/oral
Airborne Transmission AKA droplet Infection, Ex. Aerosol, Spray ,Airwater syringe
Percutaneous Transmission Getting infection through break in the skin. Ex. Rabies, Flesh easting bacteria
Blood Borne Transmission Direct or indirect contact with blood and other bodily fluids Ex. HIV, Hep B, Hep C
Food/Water transmission Food/water is contaminated (not cooked properly, feces in it) and is consumed
fecal/Oral Transmission Oral is in contact with fecal matter, usually due to improper sanitation
Types of Infections Acute, Latent, Chronic, Opportunistic
Acute Infection Severe Symptoms, appears quickly after infection occurs
Latent Infection Infection that comes and go's constantly Ex. Fever Blister
Chronic Infection Never goes away, can last a lifetime
Opportunistic Infection pathogen that is not usually infectious, occurs in people with compromised immune systems
Immunity types Natural Active, Natural Passive, Artificial Active, Artificial Passive
Natural Active contract disease, produces memory cells Ex. Chicken Pox
Natural Passive Given from mother through placenta or breast feeding
Artificial Active memory cells by vaccination
artificial Passive memory cells are not gained, but things like an IV are given temporary functions to fight pathogens
What are gloves made out of? Latex, Nitrile, Vinyl
Latex allergies Irritant Dermatitis, Type 1, Type 4
Irritant Dermatitis does not involve the immune system, causes skin to be red, dry and cracked. Caused by substance that creates a chemical reaction that irritates the skin
Type 1 Most dangerous allergy. Can cause death. Reaction within 2-3 min of contact due to protein in glove
Type 4 Most common allergy, response to chemical used to process latex, can take 48-72 hrs for red irritated skin to appear
Types of Waste General waste, Contaminated waste, hazardous waste, infectious/biohazard/regulated waste
General waste non hazardous waste to be disposed of in a covered container
contaminated waste thrown in the same place as general waste, has been in contact with blood or other blodily fluids ex. patient napkins, dental dams
Hazardous waste means of discard is different for the item and state
Infectious/biohazard/regulated waste waste that has to be disposed of by a specialist ex. pathologic, blood soaked, sharps
