| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Direct Decay | when an excited electron transitions down through more than one energy state at a time, producing either UV or visible light |
| Cascade | when an excited electron transitions down through one energy states at a time, producing either UV or visible light |
| Photon | single packet of electromagnetic energy that makes up a particle of EM radiation |
| Ionization | when an atom or molecule has lost one or more of its electrons |
| Molecule | tightly bound collection of atoms held together by their electromagnetic fields |
| Doppler Shift | change in the frequency of a wave due to the Doppler Effect |
| Radial Velocity | component of an object's velocity either coming toward, or moving away from, you |
| Line Broadening | spreading across of a greater wavelength, or frequency range, of spectral lines |
| Vibration | when molecules emit infrared radiation due to shaking back and forth |
| Rotation | when spinning molecules emit radio waves |
| Density | how compact matter is within an object (mass divided by volume) |
| Mass | total matter within an object |
| Volume | amount of space an object takes up |
| Atomic Spectra | characteristic spectrum by which a single element's atom can be recognized (ex: H) |
| Molecular Spectra | characteristic spectrum by which multiple atoms can be recognized (ex: H2) |
| Nanometer | unit of wavelength in 1x10^-9 meters |
| Angstrom | unit of wavelength in 1x10^-10 meters |
