bio 1210 chapter 1

TermDefinition
Five fundamental characteristics of living organisms -Require the use of energy -Have cells -Information -Replication -Evolution
Define theory. Give 2 theories that form modern biological sciences -Theory: is an explanation for a general class of observations that are supported by a wide body of evidence -2 theories: cell theory and theory of evolution by natural selection
Who were the two people to first observe cells in the late 1660s? Robert Hooke and Anton Van Leeuwenhoek
Define cell. What are its listed two qualities? The cell is a highly organized compartment. Two of its qualities are that it is bounded by a plasma membrane and it contains concentrated chemicals in an aqueous solution
What two ideas does cell theory state? -The pattern is made of cells. All organisms are made of cells -And a process is made of pre-existing cells. All cells come from pre-existing cells
List the four types of macromolecules -Polypeptides -Nucleic acids -Carbohydrates -Lipids
Define the polymer made of amino acids joined together by peptide bonds. Proteins
List the 6 functions of proteins. -Catalyst -Defense -Movement -Signaling -Structure -Transport
List the 3 uses of carbohydrates -Energy (glucose, fructose) -Storage (starch and glycogen) -Structure (peptidoglycan and cellulose)
Define lipids Membrane made of protein and phso[olipids which regulate in and out of a cell
Define Svedberg unit (S). What are the Svedberg units for the 3 major Domains of organisms? Unit S is used for the sedimentation rate or density, and the 3 major domains for this are Bacteria Archaea and Eukarya

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
