Synoptic Lesson 2
From Sikora's lesson 2 notes
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| What is Image Scale (S) | The ratio of the distance on the map to the corresponding distance on the earth. |
| What is Map Scale (s) | The image scale at one or two standard latitudes. |
| What is Map Magnification Factor (m) | Represents distortion Eqn: S = sm |
| Traits of a Mercator Map | - WMO standard lat is 22.5 degrees - All parallels and meridians are straight - Minimal distortion in tropics and man distortion in polar regions. |
| Traits of a Lambert Conical Map | - WMO standard lats of 30 and 60 degrees or 10 and 40 degrees |
| Traits of Polar Stereographic Maps | - WMO standard lat of 60 degrees - Minimal distortion in polar regions and maximum in tropics |
| MMF 1 means... | No magnification beyond the map scale. |
| When is MMF 1? | At the standard lats. |
| What is acceptable magnification with MMF | 0.9 < MMF < 1.1 |
