Words in unit 1 sec 2 scientific method

TermDefinition
Constant variable that stays the same during an experiment
Control sample that is treated like other experimental groups except that the independent variable is not applied to it
Dependent Variable factor that is being measured during an experiment (what you measure)
hypothesis prediction that or statement that can be tested and may be formed by prior knowledge, any previous observations, and new information
independent Variable variable that can be changed during an experiment (the special thing)
model represents something that is to big, too small, too dangerous, too time consuming, or too expensive to observe up close
data In every type of scientific research, data must be collected and organized carefully. When data is well organized, they are easier to interpret and analyze. Data is the information collected using your senses.
scientific method ways to solve problems that include step by step plans, making models, and carefully thought out experiments
evidence information used to help determine the truth about something
bias when you favor something more based on your own beliefs
experiment a scientific list of steps done to test a hypothesis
inference when using the evidence you have obtained to make an informed decision about a possible outcome
observation collection of data using your senses
conclusion a decision made based on evidence collected and utilizing the reasoning a person has
direct observation a collection of data that you collected
indirect observation a collection of data given to you by someone else
scientific law 100% accepted and true. We know it exists but sometimes we are not sure how or why.
scientific theory a generally accepted, thoroughly tested and confirmed explanation for a set of observations.
prediction utilizing clues, background knowledge and collected evidence to consider what may happen as a result
