Biology Chapter 3C
Part 3 of Chapter 3 Vocab.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Ecological pyramids | Illustration of the relative amounts of energy or matter contained within each trophic level in a given food chain or food web. |
| Biomass | Total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level. The total mass of all living material in a specific area, habitat, or region. |
| Biogeochemical cycles | Process in which elements, chemical compounds, and other forms of matter are passed between living organisms and the physical environment. *As a matter is recycled, it is often transformed, but never created nor destroyed.* |
| Nutrients | Chemical substance that an organism needs to sustain life. |
| Nitrogen fixation | Process of converting nitrogen gas into nitrogen compounds that plants can absorb and use. |
| Denitrification 1 | Process by which bacteria convert nitrates into nitrogen gas (N2), in which the nitrate is reduced or removed from soil, water, or air. |
| Denitrification 2 | Removes fixed nitrogen from ecosystems and converts it back into atmospheric (N2). *When a plant or animal dies, decomposers like fungi and bacteria turn the nitrogen back into ammonium so it can reenter the nitrogen cycle.* |
| Limiting nutrient | Single essential nutrient that limits productivity in an ecosystem and the available quantity of this nutrient controls the pace at which organisms are produced. |
| Limiting nutrient 2 | An increase in the limiting nutrient shows an increase in the growth of organisms in the ecosystem. *The limiting nutrient that maintains the delicate balance of the ecosystem.* |
