Nature of Science

Vocabulary words

TermDefinition
variables Things that can change or be changed in an experiment There are 3 types of variables: independent, dependent and controlled
fair test one variable changes and other variables stay the same
replicate to repeat an experiment
evidence Facts
conclusion A summary of what happened in the experiment. Answers the testable question and explains if the hypothesis was correct or incorrect
model An object or idea that represents something else.
phenomena an event that is not created by humans
data Evidence from experiments
scientific method the organized process of answering questions and gathering facts through testing and experimenting
testable question a question that can be answered by an experiment
hypothesis a possible answer to a testable question (prediction)
procedure a set of step-by-step instructions for how to perform a test
investigation a careful way of looking for answers to a question
observation using our senses to carefully notice what is happening
science tool an object used to measure objects or gather information
science sscprocess of learning about the natural world through observation and experimentation
