| matter | A physical substance made of atoms that has mass and takes up space |
| atom | The basic building blocks of all matter |
| molecule | A group of atoms bonded together |
| phase change | A change from one state to another without a change in chemical composition |
| chemical reaction | When two or more different substances are mixed, a new substance with different properties may be formed |
| property | A characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured |
| evaporation | A change of state from a liquid to a gas |
| condensation | A change of state from a gas to a liquid |
| solubility | The ability to dissolve into another substance |
| flammability | A measure of how easily matter will burn |
| conductivity | The ability of a substance to conduct heat or electric current |
| forces | A push or pull that one object exerts on another |
| gravity | The force exerted by Earth that pulls objects near the surface to the center of the planet |
| energy | The ability to cause change, or do work |
| energy transfer | The movement of energy from one object to another |
| energy production | The conversion of stored energy into a desired form |
| photosynthesis | The process which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxiode to create their own food |
| consumer | An animal that gets energy by eating plants or other animals for food |
| decomposer | An organism that breaks down dead plants and animals |
| ecosystem | A community of living and non living things that work together |
| interdependence | Organisms interact and rely on each other in nature for survival |
| invasive species | Any newly introduced species that can damage food chains, change the environment, carry disease or prey on native species |
| universe | Stars grouped together in space in a huge collection |
| stars | Giant balls of exploding gas |
| galaxy | A collection of things that exist in space |
| Earth's axis | An imaginary line that passes through the North and South poles on the planet |
| Earth's orbit | The elliptical path that the Earth takes around the sun once every year |
| Constellation | A group of stars that form a pattern in the sky |
| Moon | Earth's only natural satellite |
| Geosphere | Includes the only non-living soil, rocks and minerals that make up the land on Earth |
| Biosphere | Includes the living plants and animals in the many biomes of Earth |
| Hydrosphere | Includes all the water on Earth including rivers, lakes, oceans and glaciers |
| Atmosphere | Includes all the gases on the planet |
| Climate | The range of an area's typical weather conditions and the extent to which these conditions vary over many years |
| Engineering | A test of quality used to indentify failure points in a design and identify the areas of the design that need improvement |
| Failure Point | A flaw in the design or use of a system that has the potential to stop the system from successfully solving the problem |
| Fair test | The application of science in the process of design |
