Earth Science

TermDefinition
hypothesis a possible explanation for a set of observations or answers to a scientific question (an educated guess)
controlled experiment a test of a hypothesis under conditions established by the scientist
independent variable (manipulated variable) the variable that the scientist is testing
dependent variable (responding variable) the variable the scientist is measuring because it changes when the manipulated variable is tested
inferring explaining or interpreting things because of something you already know
observing using one or more of your senses to gather information
geology the study of the solid Earth that has been shaped due to forces over billions of years
oceanography the study of Earth's oceans
meteorology the study of the conditions of the Earth's atmosphere
astronomy the study of the universe beyond planet Earth
environmental science the study of the effects of human activity on the earth's environment
