What is a carcinoma? Cancer of the epithelial
What is adenocarcinoma? Gland tumor
What is a sarcoma? Cancer of connective tissue or muscle
What is leukimia? Cancer of fluid connective tissues
What is a primary tumor? Initial location of the tumor
What is a secondary tumor? Tumor that spreads into adjacent tumors
What is metastasis? Tumor that spreads through blood or lymph to another remote area.
What are the 3 major sites of metastasis? Local nymphnodes, lungs, and liver.
What are the 2 minor sites of metastasis? Bone and brain.
What are the 5 leading causes of cancer? Radiation, carcinogen, heredity, age, and viruses.
Give 3 examples of radiation that causes cancer. UV, nuclear, and X-rays.
What is carcinogen? A chemical that stimulates cells to become cancerous.
What are the two types of treatment for cancer? Surgery or radiation.
What 2 types of surgery will treat cancer? curative and debulking
What 2 types of radiation will treat cancer? Radio active isotopes and special x-rays
What does chemotherapy do? The drugs target the cancer rapidly reducing the cells. The drug goes every where, however there are lots of side effects.
What are the side effects of chemotherpy? It damages normal reproducing cells.
How does it affect the bone marrow? Anemia, infections, and bleeding.
How does it affect the digestive lining? Diarrihea, vomiting, nausea.
How does it affect hair follicles? Hair loss.
What is remission? The temporary shut down of cancer.
