Buzz Words and some associated terms for Music 1

| Interest and Variety | Identify and describe features of the music that are unconventional or create contrast. What's different? |
| Unity and Contrast | Relates to structure and how we identify sections based on what is the SAME and what is DIFFERENT in a piece of music. |
| Unity | The features of a piece of music that hold it together. Relates to sameness. What repeats? |
| Contrast | The features of a piece of music that are different or unique. Relates to variety and interest. What is different? |
| Tension and Resolution | Identify and describe the features of the music that build/ create unresolved sounds and when/ how a sense of musical climax is achieved. Relates to pitch - Imperfect and Perfect Cadence. |
| Tension | Identify and describe the features of the music that create a sense of unease, dissonance, awkwardness or incompleteness. |
| Tremelo | An expressive technique used on strings to create tension by rapidly repeating a single note for an extended period of time. |
| Imperfect Cadence | Two chords used at the end of musical phrase/ section that sounds very unresolved/ incomplete. Typically, Chord I to Chord V. |
| Balanced Phrasing | Arranging musical ideas evenly to create a sense of predictability and unity in a piece of music. Relates to structure and pitch. |
| Unbalanced Phrasing | Arranging musical ideas unevenly to create a sense of unease, awkwardness and tension. Relates to structure and pitch. |
| Diatonic | The piece of music is all in one key/ tonality. Sounds consonant and creates a sense of unity. |
| Atonal | The piece of music has no clear Tonic [musical home] and therefor sounds unresolved, uneasy, dissonant and tense. |
| Unconventional Techniques | Vocal or Instrumental techniques that are outside of what is typically used. e.g. Screaming. Drumming on the top of the piano cabinet. |
