Elements of Music

Terms and definitions

TermDefinition
Tempo The speed at which a passage of music is or should be played.
Rhythm A strong, regular, repeated pattern of movement or sound.
Melody A sequence of single notes that is musically satisfying.
Harmony The combination of simultaneously sounded musical notes to produce chords and chord progressions having a pleasing effect.
Timbre The character or quality of a musical sound or voice as distinct from its pitch and intensity.
Form The structure of a musical composition.
Dynamics The branch of mechanics concerned with the motion of bodies under the action of forces.
Pitch The quality of a sound governed by the rate of vibrations producing it; the degree of highness or lowness of a tone.
Verses Writing arranged with a metrical rhythm, typically having a rhyme.
Refrain The line or lines that are repeated in music or in poetry
Bridge sections A bridge is a section of a song that's intended to provide contrast to the rest of the composition.
