Context Clues Terms/definitions

TermDefinition
Definition the word’s meaning before or after the word appears, usually set off by a comma
Example examples in a text that may demonstrate the meaning of a word
Comparison determining a word’s meaning based on how it is like something else in the text
Contrast determining a word’s meaning based on how it is unlike something else in the text
Cause-and-effect the use of the word as the result of something else that happens in the text.
Context clues hints in the surrounding text that a reader can use to figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word
Infer an educated guess based on what is already known and what is read.
