scientific method
| Term | Definition |

| conclusion | The result after all evidence is collected and studied. |
| evidence | Observations, data, or measurements collected to understand and explain a science concept |
| experiment | Scientific test or procedure that is carried out under controlled conditions to answer a scientific question |
| control group | Group in experiment that compares to experimental group; the group that is standard, or normally done. |
| Variables | The parts of an experiment that have conditions. |
| Controlled variable | (was constant variable) Something that doesn’t change. In an experiment, the conditions are the same. |
| independent variable | What is the one thing that is changed; what will affect the dependent variable in the experiment. |
| dependent variable | Variable that responds to the change, what is measured. |
| explanation | Scientists use evidence (data collection, observations, or measurements) to explain science concepts |
| hypothesis | A prediction of what will happen based on background information (never a guess). |
| inference | An explanation based on evidence that has been collected. |
| inquiry | Looking for information by asking questions. |
| investigation | Organized scientific study of the natural world with making systematic observations, asking questions, gathering information, analyzing data, summarizing results, drawing conclusions, and communicating results. |
| observation | Information about the natural world gathered through the senses and/or scientific instruments |
| opinion | How someone ‘feels’ about a concept. |
| predict | To state what one thinks will happen under certain conditions based on data or observation. |
| procedure | The steps followed when doing an experiment (scientific method). |
| record keeping | Measurements or observations that are collected during investigations or experiments. |
| repeat/ replicate | When trials in an experiment are done over and over. |
| scientific method | The steps and all the components of an experiment. |
| testable | A term used to describe a question that can be answered through an experiment or observation. |
| multiple/ repeated trials | Number of times an experiment is conducted. |
