Changing Environment

TermDefinition
Change To alter the properties of an object, process, or event.
Classification The process of organizing data or grouping observations on the basis of similar characteristics.
Celestial motions The observed or apparent change in position of stars.
Cycle A pattern that repeats in regular time period.
Cyclic change A pattern of change that repeats within regular intervals of time and/or space.
Density The property of matter that indicates the mass per unit volume. Density provides an indication of the packing of the particles of matter. Density is calculated an equation: D=m/v
Earth The third planet, by distance, that orbits the Sun. The only planet currently known to support life.
Lunar eclipse, eclipse of the Moon A celestial event in which the Moon moves through Earth’s shadow. During a lunar eclipse Earth prevents sunlight from reaching the Moon’s surface, causing the Moon to appear darker.
Mass A fundamental measurement that determines the quantity of matter in an object.
Mineral Any naturally occurring, inorganic solid, with a definite chemical composition. Minerals are generally identified on the basis of their physical properties.
Moon A natural satellite that revolves around a larger, non-stellar, object such as a planet, exoplanet, or asteroid. Earth’s natural satellite, The Moon orbits (revolves around) Earth in one month.
Orbit The path a object takes as it revolves around another object. The path of a planet around the Sun, or a satellite around a planet.
Phases Changes in the amount of the illuminated portion of an object as viewed from the Earth.
Planet A solar system body that has: (a) an orbit around the Sun; (b) enough mass and gravity to produce a nearly spherical shape; (c) cleared the neighborhood near its orbit; a major body that orbits a star.
Pollution The addition of anything to the environment to levels that become harmful to the natural equilibrium. Forms of pollution can include: chemicals, energy, and exotic life forms.
Revolution The motion of one object around another object. The planets revolve around the Sun. Moons and satellites revolve around planets.
Rotation The spinning of an object on its axis. The rotation of the Earth once every 24 hours causes the Coriolis effect and the apparent change in the path of a Foucault pendulum.
Seasons Winter, spring, summer, and fall. The cyclic variation in weather conditions experienced because of the tilt of the axis, revolution, and parallelism.
Slope Gradient or rate of change. The amount of change that occurs per unit distance. The amount of incline of a line or surface.
Solar eclipse An event that occurs when the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun. When the shadow of the Moon moves across the Earth. The outer atmosphere of the sun, the corona, is visible during a total Solar eclipse.
Sunspots Cooler dark regions on the surface (photosphere) of the Sun.
Tides The periodic rise and fall of the sea as a result of the gravitational attractions of the Moon and Sun on the Earth.
Volcano A mountain formed by the accumulation of lava and/or pyroclastic material. A cone-shaped mountain that forms as a result of extrusive igneous activity.
Volume The amount of space occupied by an abject.
