| Solar Eclipse | when a new Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun's light |
| Partial Eclipse | when only part of the Sun or Moon is blocked from view |

| Umbra | central, darkest region of a shadow cast by an eclipsing body |
| Penumbra | outer, lighter region of a shadow cast by an eclipsing body |
| Triangulation | used to determine distances based on geometry (trigonometry) |
| Baseline | distance between two locations of observation, used to help determine how far away an object is |
| Parallax | apparent motion of an object with respect to a distant background (stars) as the observer's location changes |
| Eratosthenes | first person to calculate the Earth's circumference from the angles of shadows at different locations |
| Angular Diameter | angle made between two opposite edges of an object as seen by an observer (apparent size) |
