What is matter? Anything that has mass and takes up space.
What is mixtures? A substance that contains more than one kind of matter.
What is a molecule? The smallest particle of a compound that retains the properties of the compound.
What are substances? A mixture that cannot be separated into Different kinds of matter using physical means.
What are elements? Substances that contain only one kind of matter.
What are examples of elements? Copper metal, oxygen gas and liquid nitrogen.
What are compounds? Substances made of 2 or more elements that cannot be separated by physical means.
What are examples of compounds? Table salt, rust, carbon dioxide gas.
What is homogeneous mixture? A mixture in which every sample of it has the same composition.
What are examples of homogeneous mixture? Soda pop, air, chocolate ice cream and window cleaner.
What is hetergeneous mixture? A mixture in which every sample of it might have a different composition.
What are examples of hetergeneous mixture? Chicken soup, soil, fudge ripple icecream, blood.
What is an atom? The smallest particale of an element that can exists alone or in combination with other atoms.
what are the two categories of matter? They are mixtures and substances.
What are the four familiar states of matter? They are solid, liquid, gas and plasma.
What is the movement of atoms or molecules in solid form? Molecules constantly vibrate but cannot switch places with other molecules.
What is the movement of atoms or molecules in liquid form? Molecules move faster and slip out of position. Molecules can move.
What retains it shape and size? Solid.
What has a definite size but not shape? Liquids.
What is melting point? Physical process that resuls in the phase change of a substance from a solid to liquid.
