fact an objective, verifiable observation
principle a statement based on repeated experimental observation that describes an aspect of the world.
law broad concept of principle(HOW), describes patterns in nature, accepted as facts
theory an explanation of an observed phenomenon, organizes facts and research from scientists to explain (WHY), never a fact or law
qualitative describes qualities
quantitative uses numbers to measure something
independent variable what the experimenter will deliberately change or manipulate in the investigation
dependent variable what changes in response to the independent variable
constant/ controlled variable the aspects of an experiment that are held constant/consistent
experimental group groups that are being tested
control group group used for comparison with your experimental groups. This is the “normal” group
technology the application of science for practical purposes; the use of tools, machines, materials, and processes to meet human needs
engineering applies scientific and mathematical principles to solve problems
biology the study of life
unicellular describes an organism based of a single cell
multicellular describes a tissue, organ, or organism that is made of many cells
sexual reproduction reproduction in which gametes in two parents unite
asexual reproduction reproduction that doesn't involve the union of gametes and in which a single parent produces offspring that are genetically identical to the parent
genetic code the rule that describes how a sequence of nucleotides, triplets, that correspond to specific amino acids, specifies the sequence of protein
cell differentiation processes by which unspecialized cells develop into their mature form and function
metabolism the sum of all chemical processes that occur in an organism
stimulus something that causes a physiological response
response a reaction
homeostasis regulation and maintenance of constant internal conditions in an organism
