QuestionAnswer
Scientific Method The name of a series of steps that are followed in order to find the answer to a scientific problem
Conclusion States whether your data supported the hypothesis
Hypothesis A prediction based on fact, completed after the background info is gathered and that must be testable.
Background Research getting information that is already known about your topic from books, internet and experts that can help you to form a hypothesis.
Experiment a controlled investigation of the scientific method that tests the hypothesis
Materials A detailed list of all the equipment that you will use in the experiment
Procedure A sequence of steps that you will follow to complete the experiment and test your hypothesis
Observation A description of anything seen, heard, smelled or felt during the experiment.
Quantitative Data or Observation which involves the use of numbers. ex) There are 31 students in the classroom
Qualitative Data or Observation which does not involve numbers. ex) The classroom is very full.
Data Any numerical information collected during the experiment. Usually shown in the form of tables & graphs.
Analysis Interpreting your data and explaining why you got the result that you did
Constant The variables in an experiment that are kept the same in all trials so the experiment is fair
Variables Anything you can change or may change in an experiment.
Independent variable The variable that is changed on purpose. It is also called manipulated variable.
Dependent variable The responding variable, it changes when the independent variable changes (the effect). It is the variable that is measured.
Control used for comparison to see if the variable being tested had an effect. It is the group that doesn't have anything changed
Controlled experiment A series of experiments in which only one veriable is changes at a time
Research Question the purpose of your project stated in the form of a question.
Trials the number of times an experiment is repeated for each level, or value of the independant variable.
