| food chain | diagram that shows how energy and nutrients are transferred from one organism to another |
| primary consumer | an organism that feeds on plants (herbivore) |
| secondary consumer | carnivore that eats only primary consumer |
| tertiary consumer | carnivore that feeds only on secondary consumer; at top most level of food chain |
| food web | diagram that shows the feeding relationship between organisms in an ecosystem |
| symbiosis | close, long term association between two or more species |
| mutualism | symbiotic relationship where both organisms benefit |
| parasitism | symbiotic relationship where one organism benefits and other is harmed |
| commensalism | symbiotic relationship where one organism benefits and other is unharmed |
| energy pyramid | shows an ecosystem loss of energy |
| What plants need for photosynthesis | sunlight, water, carbon dioxide |
| herbivore | organism that eats only plants |
| carnivore | organism that eats only animals |
| omnivore | organism that eats plants and animals |

| population growth | change in the number of species in a specific location during a time period |
| limiting factors | a factor that slows or stops a population from growing |
| ecosystem stability | the ability of an ecosystem to resist change when a challenge is presented to the ecosystem |
| sustainability | an ecosystem's ability to maintain normal conditions |
| Symbiotic Relationship | Interactions of an organism in an ecosystem. Can be harmful, helpful or neutral |
