Cells Science 7
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell | the smallest unit that can perform life functions |
| Cell Membrane | A protective layer around all cells |
| Cytoplasm | -gelatin-like material in the cell -this is the region between the cell membrane and the nucleus where organelles are located |
| Prokaryotic Cell | A cell that does not have membrane bound structures inside the cell |
| Eukaryotic Cell | A cell with membrane bound structures inside the cell |
| Cell Wall | Tough, rigid outer covering that protects the cell and gives it shape |
| Vacuole | -stores food, water, waste -larger in plant cells |
| Organelles | structures within the cytoplasm of a eukaryotic cells |
| Nucleus | Directs all cell activities and contains DNA |
| Chloroplasts | Green organelle that contains chlorophyll and is where food is made |
| Mitochondria | Where energy is stored until it is released. Mitochondria releases energy by breaking down food, carbon dioxide, and water. |
| Ribosomes | Protein structures. They are not membrane bound. |
| Nucleolus | Where ribosomes are made |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) | A series of folded membranes in which materials can be processed and moved around inside the cell. |
| Lysosome | Contains digestive chemicals to help break down materials in cell. |
| Cell Organization | Cell-> Tissue-> Organs-> Organ System |
| chlorophyll | green pigment (inside PLANT cells) that captures light energy to make glucose (during photosynthesis) |
