Universe all of space, time, matter, and energy
Astronomy study of celestial objects, space, and the physical universe
Light-Year distance light travels in one year
Local Neighborhood small collection of nearby stars that includes our solar system
Local Group small cluster of nearby galaxies that includes our Milky Way
Scientific Method used to help guide science and test, modify, or replace scientific theories
Scientific Theory used to explain observations and make predictions about the real world
Scientific Law precise description of an observed phenomenon
Constellation formal group of stars in the sky with a recognizable pattern (e.g. Ursa Major)
Alpha Star brightest star in a constellation
Asterism group of stars with a popular name but part of a formal constellation (e.g. "Big Dipper")
Polaris the North Star
Astrology pseudoscience that uses the planets, Sun, and Moon's positions to predict human behavior
Celestial Sphere imaginary sphere surrounding the Earth once thought to have all sky objects attached
Celestial Poles projection of Earth's poles onto the celestial sphere
Celestial Equator projection of Earth's equator onto the celestial sphere
Celestial Coordinates used to locate objects on the celestial sphere via declination and right ascension
Celestial Meridian projection of Earth's prime meridian onto the celestial sphere
Declination used to measure latitude (in degrees) above or below the celestial equator
Right Ascension used to measure longitude (in hours) east or west of the celestial meridian
Zenith area in the sky directly above an earthbound observer
