atomic number the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
atomic mass The average mass of all the isotopes of an element
periodic table A chart of the elements showing the repeating pattern of their properties
group A column on the periodic table
period A horizontal row of elements in the periodic table
valence electron Electrons on the outermost energy level of an atom
metal an element that is shiny and that conducts heat and electricity well
nonmetal an element or substance that is not a metal
metaloid an element that has properties of both metals and nonmetals
ductile A term used to describe a material that can be pulled out into a long wire.
malleable capable of being shaped
insulator A material that does not allow heat or electrons to move through it easily.
conductor A material that conducts heat well
semiconductor element that does not conduct electricity as well as metal but conducts better that a nonmetal
luster The way a mineral reflects light (shiny or very bright objects)
reactivity How readily a substance combines chemically with other substances.
