What are the 2 major roots of psychology? Philosophy and Natural Sciences
Wilhelm Wundt considered the first experimental psychologist believed in structuralism
Structuralism the idea that the mind can be broken down into the smallest elements of the mental experience; the mental experience as a hierarchy
Who founded Gestalt Psychology? Kurt Koffka, Max Wertheimer, and Wolfgang Kohler
What is Gestalt Psychology? The opposite approach from structuralism; experience is the whole not its parts
Functionalism Behavior is purposeful and meant for survival; William James
Sigmond Freud worked on consciousness, sexuality, abnormal behavior, and psychotherapy
Humanistic Psychology saw people as inherently good and motivated to learn and improve; Maslow
Behaviorism features the study and careful measurement of observable behaviors; Pavlov
The law of effect Proposed by Edward Thorndike; suggests that behaviors followed by pleasant outcomes are more likely to occur than behaviors followed by unpleasant outcomes
Biological Psychology(behavioral neuroscience) focuses on relationships between mind and behavior and their underlying processes(ie. genetics, biochemistry, anatomy, ad physiology)
Evolutionary Psychology how has our physical structure and behavior shape been shaped by our need for survival and reproduction
Cognitive Psychology focuses on the process of thinking, reasoning, and problem solving
Developmental Psychology explores the normal changes in behavior as we age
Social Psychology describes the effects of the social environment on individuals' behavior
Clinical Psychology aims to explain, define, and treat psychological disorders
