Rock Layers (Geologic Time)
| Term | Definition |

| Geologic Time Scale | Arrangement of events used as a measure of the relative or absolute age of any part of geologic time. |
| Sedimentary Rock | Rock that forms when sediment (small pieces of rock) from erosion is compressed together. |
| Erosion | When small pieces of rock (sediment) are moved around by wind and/or water. |
| Deposited | When sediment stops moving and collects in a new area. |
| Weathering | When rocks are broken down into smaller pieces. |
| Intrusion | When molten rock from inside Earth moves through cracks in the rock layers, sometimes coming to Earth's surface. |
| Relative Dating | A way to figure out the age of a fossil by comparing its placement with that of fossils in other layers of rock. |
| Absolute Dating | Determining the exact age of something. |
| Fossil | Evidence of past life that have been preserved in rocks. |
| Plate Tectonics | The movement of Earth’s plates that can cause rock layers to move. |
