Anti-Kickback Statute Federal Law that prohibits the exchange of anything of value in an effort to induce/reward the referral of business
Bias Preference of one thing over another
Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 Regulates all lab facilities for safety and handling of specimens to ensure accuracy and timeliness of testing
Compliance Adherence to guidelines and regulations set forth by an organization and or a governing body
Compliance Officer individual in an organization who is designated to maintain and inspect the adherence to regulations
Compliance Plan Policies/procedures used to ensure that guidelines are obeyed
Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act of 1986 Federal Law that any hospital emergency room provides medical screening to treat and stabilize a patient regardless of insurance status
False Claims Act Federal Law that prevents an individual or organization from knowingly creating a false record or submitting a false claim
Fraud Deliberate intentional act to mislead for financial gain
Medical Practice Acts Laws defined by each of the states that regulate the licensing and medical laws for that state and define the scope of practice for licensed and unlicensed individuals in the healthcare field
Office of Inspector General independent agency that functions under the department of justice to investigate and protect integrity of DHHS and their recipients
Patient's Bill of Rights Basic Rules of Conduct between patients and medical caregivers
Sanctions Penalties to serve as punishment or enforcement of rules and regulations
Stark Law set of federal laws designed to maintain the integrity of the med field
Whistleblower individual who turns in his/her employer for potential fraud and abuse
