| empirical evidence | the observations, measurements, and other types of data that people gather and test to evaluate scientific ideas. |
| theory | a system of ideas that explains many related observations and is supported by a large body of evidence collected through scientific investigation. Often explains the "how" or "why" behind what we observe in nature. |
| law | a descriptive statement or equation that reliably predicts events under certain conditions. Explains "what" we see in nature. |
| experiment | an organized procedure to study something under controlled conditions. |
| observation | the process of obtaining information using the senses. |
| hypothesis | a testable idea or explanation that leads to a scientific investigation |
| data | information gathered by observation or experimentation that can be used in calculation or reasoning. |
| independent variable | in a scientific investigation, the variable that is deliberately manipulated |
| dependent variable | in a scientific investigation, the variable that changes as a result of manipulation, resulting in data to collect. |
| constant | in a scientific investigation, the factors that do not change throughout the investigation. |
| experimental group | in a scientific investigation, the group or trial that contains the independent variable. |
| control group | in a scientific investigation, the group or trial that does not contain the the independent variable. |
| model | a pattern, plan, representation, or description designed to show the structure or workings of an object, system, or concept. |
| simulation | a method that is used to study and analyze the characteristics of an actual or theoretical system. |
