Week 10 CON

Week 10 Atrial Dysrhythmias 246

QuestionAnswer
Ectopic signal starts in the left or right atrium and travels across the atria by an abnormal pathway.
Causes of PAC in the healthy heart: Emotional stress - Physical fatigue - Caffeine, tobacco, alcohol use
Medical conditions that are associated with PAC: Hypoxia - Electrolyte imbalances - Disease states (hyperthyroidism, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD], and heart disease, including CAD and valvular disease)
Atrial flutter is an atrial tachydysrhythmia identified by recurring, regular, sawtooth-shaped flutter waves that originate from a single ectopic focus in the right atrium or, less commonly, the left atrium.
Causes of Atrial flutter in the normal heart: Atrial flutter rarely occurs in a healthy heart. May be associated with use of drugs such as digoxin, quinidine, and epinephrine
Medical conditions that cause atrial flutter: Coronary artery disease - Hypertension - Mitral valve disorders - Pulmonary embolus - Chronic lung disease - Cor pulmonale - Cardiomyopathy - Hyperthyroidism -
A patient who is otherwise healthy is experiencing premature atrial contractions (PACs). The patient asks what could be causing the PACs. Which is the best response by the nurse? “Your coffee and cigarette use.”
Which statement describes a patient who has an ECG reading with a ventricular rate of 120 and loss of the atrial kick? The patient experiences a decrease in cardiac output because of ineffective atrial contractions.
A patient is diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Which ECG findings does the nurse expect? Atrial rate of 580 bpm/variable and irregular ventricular rate
The nurse is caring for a patient with shortness of breath, dizziness, and chest pressure. The nurse notes a thready, irregular pulse, and an ECG that indicates atrial fibrillation. Which action would the nurse take first? Administer a dose of warfarin
Which nursing intervention is a priority for Ms. Keim? Recommend less coffee and stress relief
Ms. Keim reports increasing dyspnea, nausea and chest pressure. The nurse notes a thready, irregular radial pulse and diaphoresis. Which nursing action is a priority? Repeat ECG
Match the type of atrial dysrhythmia with its ECG characteristics. Atrial flutter - Premature atrial contraction - Atrial fibrillation
The nurse is working with a patient who has a atrial rate of 500 beats per minute (bpm). The nurse expects which characteristic ECG abnormality? Fibrillatory P wave
A patient reports feeling palpitations and chest heaviness after several days of gastroenteritis. The nurse notes a serum potassium level of 3.1, and the The nurse expects the health care provider to order which medication class for this patient? Calcium channel blocker
A patient with a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) presents with chest pain and signs of atrial flutter. The patient’s vital signs are blood pressure 65/40, temperature 99.0 °F, heart rate 135 beats per minute, and - Administer warfarin according to orders - Prepare the patient for an electrical cardioversion - Administer a dose of IV narcotic pain medication
patient with a history of hypertension presents with chest tightness and discomfort, dyspnea, and dizziness. The ECG is shown. Which process is the primary goal when treating this patient? Increase AV block
Why might a patient with atrial flutter be prescribed warfarin? To decrease stroke risk
