| Substantive Law Category | the law establishing both the rights an individual has in society and also the limits on her conduct. right to vote, to travel, to own property |
| Procedural Law Category | determines how the substantive laws will be enforced. The rules governing arrest, investigation, and pre-trial and court processes in both criminal and civil cases are examples. |
| Public Law | includes constitutional law, which determines how the country is governed, and laws that affect individuals’ relationships with government. |
| Examples of public Law | Criminal law and the regulations created by government agencies |
| Private Law | involves rules that govern our personal, social, and business relations. |
| Examples of private Law | Contract law and tort law are two examples. Private law is enforced when one person sues another in a private or civil action. |
