Unit 2 Populations and Resources 6th grade

| competition | when two or more populations use the same resource, such as the same food source |
| consumer population | a population that eats organisms from another population |
| ecologist | a scientist who studies the interactions of organisms with each other and their environment |
| ecosystem | all the living and nonliving things interacting in a particular area |
| energy | the ability to make things move or change |
| energy storage molecule | a molecule that organisms can use to release the energy they need to survive |
| food web | a model that shows what eats what in an ecosystem |
| glucose | a molecule that organisms can use to release energy, and that is made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms |
| indirect effect | the result of one cause leading to an effect that causes one or more other effects |
| molecule | a group of atoms joined together in a particular way |
| organisms | living things, such as plants, animals, and bacteria |
| population | a group of the same type of organism living in the same area |
| reproduction | the process of creating offspring |
| resource population | a population that is eaten by organisms from another population |
| sample | a small part that is meant to show what the whole is like |
| stability | when something stays mostly the same over time |
| symbiosis | relationship of 2 living organisms that live together in the same environment in which at least one species benefits |
| mutualism | a symbiotic relationship in which both species benefit |
| commensalism | a symbiotic relationship in which one species benefits and the other is unaffected |
| parasitism | a symbiotic relationship in which one species benefits and the other is harmed |
| herbivore | an animal that eats only plants |
| omnivore | an animal that eats plants and animals |
| carnivore | an animal that eats only animals (usually a predator) |
| detritivore | an organism that consumes dead or decaying matter |
| per-capita consumption | how much/many resources one person uses |
| producer | an organism that gets light from the Sun to create food |
| community | all the living things in an ecosystem (includes all of the populations) |
| invasive species | a nonnative species that causes harm to the ecosystem in which it has been introduced |
| keystone species | a species in which its removal from an ecosystem affects the whole ecosystem negatively |
| biodiversity | refers to the number of different species in an ecosystem or community |
