Biology Review #6

TermDefinition
Variation [Beaks of Finches] Allows for adaptation.
Niches [Beaks of Finches] A particular placement in an environment that is the result of different characteristics. This leads to less competition.
Competition [Beaks of Finches] Is based on food preferences, not physical characteristics.
Survival [Beaks of Finches] Is also based on characteristics such as agility, eyesight, speed, aggression, & coordination.
Physical Characteristics [Botana Curus] What is looks like. DOES NOT indicate similarity.
Molecular Characteristics [Botana Curus] Enzymes & other proteins, DNA & pigments. Are a BETTER indicator of similarity.
Chromatography [Botana Curus] Separates a mixture based on attraction to the stationary medium (paper) vs. the mobile medium (water).
Gel Electrophoresis [Botana Curus] Separates DNA or protein based on size & charge using electricity. Smallest pieces travel farthest and negative pieces are attracted to the positive charge.
Tests to Support the Hypothesis [Beaks of Finches] -Testing for a different enzyme. -USe a different amino acid sequence. -Use a different DNA sequence, or examine parts of the plant other than the seeds, stem, & flower.
Increased Activity [Clothespin] Causes an increase in heart rate & respiration rate.
Increased Heart Rate [Clothespin] Allows more oxygen & nutrients to perfuse tissue & remove wastes & CO₂.
Increased Respiration [Clothespin] Rate allows more O₂, & CO₂ to be exchanged.
Sugar [Diffusion] Tested with Blue Benedict's solution / wet bath. Result = Orange / Red. Diffused because it is small. Monomer, simple sugar.
Starch [Diffusion] Tested with Amber Iodine. Result = Blue / Black. Did not diffuse because it is big... small Iodine diffused. Polymer of sugars to make a complex carbohydrate.
Extra Information #1 [Diffusion] -Starch & glucose were put in the cell, iodine (starch indicator) & water were outside the cell. -Glucose diffused out, iodine and water diffused in, starch CAN NOT diffuse.
Extra Information #2 [Diffusion] -Liquids may be drawn through a wet mount with a paper towel on the opposite side. -Onion cell in salt solution shrivels as water diffuses out. Cell wall stays the same, but the membrane & cytoplasm shrunk. -The cell is "revived" if water is applied.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
